ABOUT ME

GAURANG PUROHIT

WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY

BASED IN LONDON

From a young age, my love for wildlife and nature blossomed through books and documentaries. I was particularly captivated by African wildlife, influenced by my parents' roots there and my father's passion for safaris and photography. Although I never had the chance to visit Africa with them, I vividly remember a conversation with my father while we watched a wildlife documentary. When I expressed my desire to go on a safari, he encouraged me to study hard and work towards that dream, assuring me that I would one day have the opportunity to see the incredible animals I admired.

It wasn't until 1996, at the age of 23, that I finally went on my first safari, traveling to Kenya with friends to explore Tsavo East and West. Over the next decade, I went on ten more safaris, but it wasn’t until 2013 that I developed a serious interest in photography. Until then, my focus had been on observing and learning, dabbling in amateur filming. This extended experience with field craft and animal behavior made my transition to still photography much smoother.

I work full-time as a healthcare professional with the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK, which has limited my travel opportunities, especially in recent years. As a father of three, finding time for wildlife adventures has been even more challenging. However, where one opportunity faded, another emerged! In recent years, my family and I have explored wildlife watching and photography right here in the UK. I do feel a bit guilty for overlooking the beauty around me for so long, but it’s never too late to appreciate what’s on our doorstep.

Now, when I venture into the field with my cameras, my children accompany me, each armed with their own cameras. While it may not be the best setup for stealthy wildlife photography, they’re honing their skills in spotting and understanding nature. There’s nothing quite like sharing a remarkable sighting with my family! Capturing great photos is a bonus, but the real treasure lies in the time spent together in these wild places.

After taking thousands of photos over the past two decades and letting them gather dust on hard drives, I decided to create this website to share my work and celebrate the true artist—nature itself! My hope is to inspire you to explore and support our last remaining wild spaces.
